Dr. Richard Kohl 

 Biography

For twenty-five years Dr. Richard Kohl has identified and solved complex problems for foundations, social and private enterprises, and international agencies.  He is highly valued for his abilities to assess programs, synthesize his findings into compelling narratives, and crystallize them into high impact solutions. For the last fifteen years, he has specialized in developing and implementing scaling and growth strategies.  Richard is an internationally recognized thought leader and expert on scaling impact. Dr. Kohl integrates his expertise in scaling up with 25 years as a Buddhist practitioner/teacher and business coach; he works with organizations where they are now  The results are sustainable impact at scale.

Highlights of Richard's diverse and extensive professional accomplishments include: serving as an advisor to major Brazilian foundations and NGOs on scaling up early childhood programs; developing and designing a strategy for scaling up of the Nike Foundation girl’s empowerment project in Rwanda; and his biggest impact yet, developing and/or strengthening the scaling strategies for the US government's Feed the Future program in nearly a dozen countries. 

 

Other Achievements (at a glance):

  • While at the US State Department became the primary USG analyst of the political economy of Persian Gulf countries during the run-up to Persian Gulf war.

  • Developed USG war financing strategy, briefed Undersecretaries of State and Defense, and Treasury and CIA

  • Economic Advisor to the Under Secretary of State for high-level negotiations between the Governor and Chief Economist of the Bank of Israel and the US Under Secretary of State regarding US conditions on Israeli loan guarantees for resettlement of Soviet Jews.

  • Scaling Up Business plan coach to Catalyst Kitchens, led to their winning the Social Impact of ExchaChange’s 2012 business plan competition

  • Successfully scaled up multiple pilot programs in maternal, child and reproductive health Nigeria

 

His talks and workshops on ‘Scaling Up’ have been presented at UC Berkeley, Harvard, MIT, Social Venture Partners, Social Enterprise Alliance, the Ford, MacArthur Foundation, Packard, and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations, USAID, The Government of India Planning Commission, UNICEF and UNDP.  Dr. Kohl has a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley and a BA with High Honors from Swarthmore College.  He also studied finance as a part-time student in the NYU MBA program. He is certified in Scenario Planning from the Global Business Network, as an Ontological Coach from the Newfield Network, and as a Somatic Coach from the Strozzi Institute.  Richard is also an authorized Shambhala Meditation and Practice Instructor.
